A QUIET eatery in downtown Medford
"Spoons is a small soup restaurant located in heart of downtown Medford.
Welcome to a healthy fast food alternative. When life gets busy fresh
local ingredients provide the nutrition you need to thrive. We love
food, people and our planet. We support local farmers and provide
wholesome nutrition...."
Terry and I were heading for the car after seeing the new Bond movie, 'Skyfall,' in Tinseltown and it hit me like a ton of bricks that we need to make Merrie and Ron's sister eatery, 'Capers,' our regular spot for a quiet drink. Of course there is a family connection through our offspring, but the fact remains they have won two or three First Prizes in Medford for gourmet dining at 'Spoons,' and 'Capers' next door, in the Woolworth Building on Central Ave.
My son, Morgan Jean, and I stop in occasionally to say hi and maybe get a bowl of soup and sides. Merrie and Morgan get a big kick out of each other, both being of the gregarious persuasion that seems to compound when they are catching up with each other's news. I take Terry next door to 'Capers' for dinner dates. I especially remember the house wine being better than most anything we have found to take home. Not that we are wine connoisseurs or anything. After all, I come from Alaska where the quality of fresh seafood makes up for the lack of a lot of 'Lower 48' luxuries.
Speaking of wine, they have an in-house wine tasting room. The only one in downtown Medford I think. There is also a bakery and a lounge, all separate from the dining room, but available for dining as well. The lunches are gourmet and can be ordered to go, which is classic. The lunches would be just perfect to bring on a guided drift fishing trip on the Rogue with the Crown Prince of Kuwait, or Harold Peppergrass of Bozeman, Montana. Upstairs is space for private business luncheons and the like. They just took over 'Capers' this summer and they are off and running. We are looking forward to many a cozy evening at 'Capers' chatting up Ron. Merrie is the 'big boss,' but Ron is the manager.
They had a farm once, so they know fresh ingredients when they see it. They have a daughter that is special to us Enges, largely because she and my oldest son are an item. Morgan Mae talks of riding the sheep and eating wild rose hips when young. I can see her doing that, having found a kinship with my globe-trotting, adventure loving son. I can almost see some sort of Harrison Ford type of archeological expedition for the two of them in the future. Morgan Mae is pursuing a masters degree in archeology and Jesse is a one-man international security detail.
